Suffolk County Music Service runs a bespoke programme for Suffolk’s talented young musicians. Known as County Ensembles, these orchestras and bands offer exciting performance and touring opportunities throughout the year. Suffolk Youth Orchestra is the ‘flagship’ ensemble, with around 90 players aged between 13-20 years old.
Suffolk Young Strings offers an excellent training programme for those wishing to eventually progress to Suffolk Youth Orchestra. Aged between 12-16 years old, members develop specialist instrument and ensemble techniques through the study and performance of a wide range of repertoire for string orchestra.
A recent highlight for Suffolk Young Strings was the immersive weekend of coaching with mentors from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, learning about authentic Baroque string techniques and trying authentic Baroque bows!
Last season’s Gala Concert marked the return of Suffolk Youth Wind Orchestra as a County Ensemble. Initially formed in the autumn of 1990, the re-formed ensemble performs a wide range of repertoire, from the most taxing symphonic wind orchestra works to jazz, big band, and show music.
