Liane Carroll and Claire Martin have both previously won the 'Best Singer' award at the British Jazz Awards; here they come together to present a centenary tribute to the wonderful, unique performer that was Ella Fitzgerald.Ella Fitzgerald dubbed 'The First Lady of Song', was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century, winning 13 Grammy awards, selling over 40 million albums.
Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She worked with all the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman.
Liane Carroll is one of the UK’s greatest singer/pianists, who with her infectious personality, brings Entertainment with a capital “E”, most recently to launch London’s 2017 Jazz Divas Series. Her first four albums all enjoyed four-starred reviews, and, 'Ballads' received five stars from Jazz Journal. Her 'Seaside' album won CD of the year at the 2015 British Jazz awards.
Claire Martin is an established tour de force on the UK jazz scene, winning seven British Jazz Awards, and receiving an OBE in 2011 for her 'Services to Jazz'. She opened the 2015 EFG London Jazz Festival in the St. James Studio, sang in the 2016 London Jazz Divas series, and sold out the Theatre twice to wide acclaim, with her 'Just the Two of Us' concerts with Joe Stilgoe.
